UTK Shop Works 2024
Workshop design has always held a sacred place in my heart. For exactly one year I worked as a Shop Supervisor for the College of Architecture and Design at the University of Tennessee Knoxville. Years of previous experience designing and managing workspaces helped distill a number of strategies that I was able to realize with institutional support. Starting with small actions, I focused on the organization of tools, cleaning supplies and storage, believing that the accumulation of little conveniences would lead to significant improvements in the greater well-being of students, staff and faculty using the FabLab and Woodshop. Eventually, larger holistic improvements were made, including an extensive cleat-based tool wall, custom clamp racks and a drawer organization system.
Every object, no matter its size or importance, was organized via its category and function, given a place, a home.
The shared Supervisor office was upgraded with a large cabinet made entirely from birch plywood.
A simple and highly customizable drawer organization system was designed and cut from Baltic Birch plywood using the shop’s CNC Router. Existing cabinets were retrofitted with spot-welded steel inserts for measurement tools. Clamps were compiled and organized with wall-mounted cleat racks.
